 1. What is Orangator:

  Orangator is a program that lets you create sounds without sampling, it is
very useful for people who want to make their own samples, but who don't have
an analog synthesizer or a professional sampler. With Orangator you can
make all types of techno 303-like sounds, synth-strings, sweeps, 808-like
drums and even some acoustic-like bells and organs. Orangator features some
cool effects like resonance (of course!), different filters, phaser, delay,
distortion, and so on.

 2. How does the Orangator work:

  Simply, it has some mathematical formulas inside, controlled with envelopes,
processed with filters and then saved on disk as a sample or played in
real time.


 3. Creating sound with Orangator:

  To create a sound you have to begin with "Mixer" panel. There you can
choose the length and sample rate. You can also load two 16-bit samples
(can be useful for drum-loops) in the file menu. I do not recommend that
you set the sample to a long length (more than 20-30k) for the first time
because you may wait too long while computer renders the sound.
  After selecting some length and sample rate you should go to "Oscillators"
menu. An oscillator is a device generates a constant waveform. Orangator allows
you to use up to 10 oscillators. To activate or deactivate a specific
oscillator, simply select the "active" button next to the oscillator
you are interested in on the left side of the panel. You may choose different
waveforms, noice or samples as a sound source. The frequency, relative frequency,
shape and volume are controlled with sliders, envelopes and whatever you
select. If you want to make some more complex and rich sound, you should
use the "Harmonics" controls. These are located on a panel that looks and acts
somewhat like an equalizer on the right hand side of the Oscillator panel.
  Selecting a "Custom" waveform in oscillator lets you draw it yourself. Do it
in "Waveform" panel with mouse.
  If you want to generate some melody or bassline with your sound, you should
go to the "Sequencer" panel. This is a kind of tracker ;). Set the needed
pattern length and enter some notes. To shape the way the notes are played,
edit the "Sequencer Envelope" paramaters: attack, decay and sustain. While
editing it is very helpful to look at the WaveGraphic showing "SeqEnv".
{After tracking the cool progression of notes go to "Oscillators" menu, set the "Frequency" slider
to base note and select it to be controlled by "Seq" (sequencer),} You also need
to hang volume controller on "MEnv1" (Midi Envelope 1) to have your
notes' volumes sound properly. You may transpose the note sequence by
changing the frequency of the oscillators. This can be used as a arpegiator
function. If you want to make a chord, in 2.0 version you don't have to turn
on more oscillators. Just go to Sequencer panel, check the chord box and write
the notes you wish to play.
  After choosing your waveform and entering your notes you should visit the
"Filters" panel (it will take effect only if "filter" is selected in "Oscillatiors").
Here you can find the mighty "Resonance" and "Cut Off".
Resonance is the main thing that lets your buzz sound like cool 303. Hang it's
on cutoff frequency on an LFO (don't forget to set big Amplitude in "LFO"
panel), an envelope, or the Graphic Envelope, which very useful for this
kind of thing.
  If you want to add some echo, reverb, overdrive or just adjust the main
volume - go to the "Amplifiers" panel. To make a cool echo, make "Delay"
active, lower its volume to 50-70% and set the legth of delay to some
hundreds of milliseconds.  You may add silence to allow the echo to smoothly
decay to zero, and turn on "Cyclic" to make cyclic echoes in arpegio or
bassline grooves.
  After creating such a wonderful sound you may want to save it ;). I hope
you are clever enough to press "Save" button for that.

 4. Tips.

 - Why is it so hard to understand?
 Because it is not a toy with 3 knobs and 2 buttons.  It is the universal
synthesizer, so you can emulate almost everything with it.  But if you look,
you'll find that it is more logical than some other synthesizers.  Just
realize the main concept: 'all needed parameters are controlled with
envelopes', think what you need and do this! The order of units is fixed
to the most usable.

 - Custom envelope and custom waveform:
 To delete a point drag it out of window or right click on it.

 - Ring modulator:
 When RingMod box checked, the oscillator modulates all the previous
oscillators by amplitude.

{ - Calming dependence in PM resonance filter: 
 The higher value, the less resonance on higher frequencies. Make it higher
if you get whistles on high resonance frequencies.}

 - Clicks:
 Check the attack and decay length. If they are too short, there can
be clicks. Usually 1% is enough to avoid them. Also if you use samples,
try changing its' start position. If clicks occur when the sample loops to
the beginning, it's ok. You can fix it by adding short attack and decay
at the beginning and the ending of the sample, or by slightly changing the
phase of your oscillators.

 - Sequencer:
 If you can't put notes, make sure your keyboard driver is english. To put
notes, use your keyboard like a tracker. Q is C4;, P is portamento,
S is sustain. To change octave use +/-.

 - If you have long delay in realtime.
 If you have gus, try changing gus playback buffer length in GUS settings
to lower value (512bytes is ok).

 - Filters:
 Resonant filters are PM, FB, TB. The other filters just removing some
frequencies, but don't resonate.
 Since I've implemented TB filter, I do not recommend using the other
types of resonant filters unless you know how they do work and
want to make something that doesn't sound ordinary.

 - RingMod, FrequencyMod & PhaseMod:
 RingMod, FreqMod and PhaseMod check boxes mean that oscillator is frequency
or phase modulated by previous oscillators. For creating ordinary FM
instrument I recommend you use PhaseMod as it is used in so called
'Frequency modulation' syntesis.

FM synthesis explanation:
If oscillator has PhaseMod checked, it is being modulated by what
all previous oscillators produce. That means that you can mix a few
oscillators and then modulate the next oscillator with this mixture.
This will look this way:

Or you can modulate the second oscillator with the first and then modulate
third oscillator with the modulated second:

So you can make rather strange schemes with it.


 - Fat and atmospheric sounds.
 The main element of such sounds is their large number of frequencies.
To create such sounds it's useful to make a few oscillators that are detuned
(for example with frequencies 100%, 100.2%,99.8%).

 - Pitch envelope.
 Pitch envelope lets you control parameters with the midi notes. That
can be useful for using filter for tone generation. On oscillators
pitch means the same that 'Melodic' checkbox.

 - Realtime.
Well. Realtime is not debugged enough, but you can try this:
Make a new preset, turn on realtime, turn on one oscillator, put it's volume
envelope to MEnv1 and press play. I think the speed of any computer should be
enough to render this in realtime. So, try to play on midi keyboard. If it
sounds without clicks on single note, then you can try to make something more
complex. Also try changing buffer length in options panel to remove any
clicks.

 - Mix types.
 Different mix types allow you to produce different sounds of two or more
oscillators. Detune them slightly to get really interesting results.

 - Sync versus FM.
 Use both sync and FM to produce melodic sounds without that FM out-of-tune
problem.

 - Plucked
 For good plucked modelling sound use high sample rates.

 5. Real-time mode:

  By turning real-time mode on you can use orangator as a real analog
polyphonic synthesizer. That means that it doesn't render samples anymore,
now it renders all the time, and if your CPU fast enough, you won't notice it.
The reason of real-time mode is to produce real analog sound, but not its
sampled variant. You can play it with a midi keyboard and (after long efforts
by me) delay won't be too long. Also, you may write something in the
sequencer and using midi loopback drivers (like HUBI's ones) listen to it
through orangator.

         - Plucked string modelling synthesis (based on Karplus-Strong
           algorithm).
         - Added valve distortion. It's the best for the tb-303 lines.
         - VST support fixed to be compatible with plugins that doesn't
           want to uppear twice. (now we don't close them, just hide them)
         - VST redrawing changed from timer to idle.
         - TB-303 model updated, more similar to default TB-303.
         - Optimization: frequency control unit optimised a lot,
           but it doesn't takes much time. Anyway, 7 sine notes instead
           of 6 that were before on my p133.

           was 7 sine notes without eq, 4 with old eq, 5 with new eq.

         - Auto Gain Down (switchable). Default is on. When it is on,
           and you play in realtime, of there's going to be clipping,
           it reduces the volume. You can move volume up again yourself.
         - Realtime amplitude led indicator optimized, so now you can
           use it in realtime without performance reduction.
         - Setup screen now appears on the first start of Orangator.
         - Bug fix: clipping was causing floating point error.
         - Midi pitch bend. Bend range can't be changed now.

           apply envelopes. That's made for synths like tb-303, that have
           sustains on portamentos. Number of it is taken 59. If you know
           the analogs of this controllers on other synthesizers,
           tell me, please.
         - Distortion soften cutoff raised to make more sharp sound
           still without sand.
         - Bug fixed: equalizer was causing crash in realtime.
         - Bug fixed: modulation wheel wasn't working in midi rendering.
         - Made simmetrical detune of plucked generators to preserve
           pitch.
         - Bug fixed: silent plucked generator was switching off
           even if bowing is on.
         - Bug fixed: preset with not existing wave file was causing
           crash.
         - TB filter changed to avoid huge overloads on low frequencies.
           Also it's resonance is higher than resonance of LowPassReso.

 9. Visual Orangator?

  Visual Orangator is a next generation of Orangator. The reason for it is
that Orangator have fixed number of Filters, Oscillators and Envelopers.
It means that you can't use different resonance filters for different
oscillators, and you can't use one oscillator as a frequency modulator
of another one. Visual Orangator breaks all this limitations and with it you
can use as many oscillators as you want, and connect them however you want!
You don't have to search anymore for that unused envelope! Now you're able to
write complete song only in orangator (but will anyone dare?). =) So, for
now it works and have all the basic units (oscillators, envelopers, mixer,
iterator and something else). Wait for release!

 14. Bonus: quick guide / getting started 

 So, here goes some examples of easy synthesizing some beautiful sounds.
You can press 'render' and 'play' after each step to see what happens with
the sound.

 - Techno bassdrum.
   The only thing easier than creating the bassdrum is creating silence. =)
   1. Go to mixer menu and set length to 5k. (because bassdrum sound
      is short)
   2. Go to oscillators menu, turn on one oscillator, set its volume and
      frequency envelope to 'Env1'. (click 'Env1' box under volume and
      frequency scrollbar).
   3. Set relative frequency to 2.5% (because bassdrum sound is low)
   That's all!
   If you make this bassdrum, please don't send it to me, I have enough
of them. =)

 - TB-303 line.
   1. Turn on one oscillator, and set its waveform to SAW or SQUARE (the
      tb303 has only those two). Lower its relative frequency to 25% (tb-303
      is the BASS station). =) Set volume envelope to env2.
   2. Go to filters sheet and turn on resonance. Set its frequency to
      whatever you want (you'll hear the difference, it works as 'Cutoff' knob
      on a real TB-303.
   3. Click on Env1 under the resonance frequency scroll bar.
   4. Go to envelopes and set Envelope 1 amplitude to 20%.
   5. Now, by changing the resonance frequency you can sweep the sounds.

 - Strings.
   1. In the oscillators panel, turn on one oscillator and set its waveform to
      something except sine (triangle for example). That will create a more
      rich spectrum.
   2. In the FX panel, turn on the chorus (click on 'active' on the top of the
      chorus box). Set the number of chorus voices to 10, for example. Now
      your strings sounds more atmospherically and has an even richer spectrum.

 - Arpeggiated loop.
   1. Turn on one oscillator and set its waveform to whatever you want (I
      would recommend 'Square' for beginning).  Set its volume envelope to 
      SEnv and frequency envelope to Seq.
   2. Change the length of the sound in the mixer sheet. For this example
      50ks will be ok. Also change the frequency to 44100.
   3. Go to the sequencer panel. Set the number of notes to 8.  You can make 
      more, but you'll have to change the length of the sound to make the 
      tempo ok). In the sequencer, write something, for example this:
	   C-4
	   C-4
	   F#4
	   G-4
	   C-4
	   G#4
	   G-4
	   C#4
      (To write this, you should use your computer keyboard as a piano 
      keyboard. That means that to put C-4 you should press 'q', C#4 - '2', 
      D-4 - 'w', D#4 - '3', E-4 - 'e' and so on. To change the octave use '+' 
      and '-').
   4. After you render and listen to this, you will hear clicks at the
      beginning of every note.  This is because the attack is very sharp.  
      Change the attack in the sequencer to something around 1%, which should 
      be enough.
   5. So, the simpliest arpeggio is ready. Turn on the resonance filter in
      the filters panel.  Changing its frequency will change the sound.  Leave 
      it on something around 4000hz.
   6. To make the sound not so cheap, go to the amplifiers sheet and turn on
      the feedback.  It is very loud by default, so move the volume slider to 
      the middle.  Also, turn on the 'cyclic' check box to make echo from the 
      end appear in the beginning of loop.

So that's the simpliest loop.  You can add more oscillators, or some effects
like chorus, flanger or overdrive however you want.
